What a bag making machine actually does
A bag making machine takes a roll of film and turns it into finished bags: it unwinds the film, seals the bottom, cuts each bag, and stacks or winds the output. The machine you need depends on the bag type, the film, the daily volume and the level of automation.
Know your bag type first
Different bags are made on different machine families. Choosing the wrong family is the most expensive mistake in a bag factory.
- T-shirt (vest) bags — high-speed lines with bottom seal and handle cutting.
- Garbage bags — drawstring, on-roll or flat bags, often with photocell registration for printed film.
- Garment bags and side-seal bags — cold or hot cutting, long bags.
- Zipper bags — machines with zipper feeding and ultrasonic or heat sealing.
- Thermal-cut bags — BOPP/OPP/PE bags cut by a heated blade: sock, towel, bread and gift bags.
Speed is not output
Manufacturers quote speed in cycles per minute. A multi-lane machine cuts several bags per cycle: a four-lane machine at 200 cycles/min produces 800 bags per minute. Real output is cycles × lanes × efficiency — ask for realistic daily production, not just the cycle number.
Size range is a product decision
Bag width is limited by the cutting width, bag length by the film feed path. If your range covers small pharmacy bags and large shopping bags, check that the machine adjusts to both sizes without long changeover. Servo-driven size adjustment is worth the cost when you change sizes often.
Sealing vs cold cutting
Thermal (hot) cutting seals and cuts in one action — the standard for most PE bags. Cold cutting suits films that are pre-sealed or cut without melting. Thermal-cut machines like the DRW series use a temperature-regulated blade, so BOPP, OPP and PE bags get a firm, flat seal without scorching.
Printed film needs registration
If your bags are printed, the machine must track each print repeat with a photocell. Color photocells read printed marks reliably on busy designs. A machine with automatic stop on lost label prevents waste from entering the sealing station.
